Improving program stability

Often I get calls from clients that are experiencing frequent problems with their software “crashing”. The fix is not always easy, but in a number of cases a few quick clicks can make a big difference.

If your computer connects to a network in your office with an ethernet card, and you are using any type of database program, you want to make sure that power management is turned off on the network cards both on your computer and your server.

To check, and change power management go to Start – Control Panel – Device Manager.  You will see a list of all the devices on your computer. Click on the plus sign next to Network Adapters to expand the section. Right click on your network adapter and click on Properties.  You should have a power management tab. If there is a box that says “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”, make sure it is NOT checked. Then click OK and File – Exit to save your changes.

This small change will prevent your computer and program from losing the connection to the server when they are not actively processing. This eliminates a problem with the program trying to communicate to the server and experience an error. The error and attempt to recover can cause what appear to be program problems or crashing.

If you have program problems check this first.
